So friends, let’s bring the left and right together – to make a clapping sound sound and welcome to the podcast JJ McCullough.
A very interesting interview with a genuinely independent thinker. I particularly like the bursting of the Canadian moral superiority/politeness bubble! Well done.
I wouldn’t sentimentalise pre-colonial borders. The borders of North America or the Middle East are older and more durable than, ironically, the borders of Europe. European borders, post-Yalta and post-Yugoslavia are just as arbitrary and involved infinitely more bloodshed. And many Native American tribes and bands were hunter-gatherers with no fixed boundary.
But I do love JJ’s flag critiques. I really think Canada has really interesting designs in its provincial flags. Some really interesting history of the French fleurs de lis, and also the iconic Red Ensign design is pretty cool. I think the PEI flag is pretty…wow, surreal.
And nor have I ever heard a Canadian pronounce ‘aboot’. None.
Enjoyed this interview! Have followed JJ for a while now & he had a link to this podcast. When I saw it was over an hour, I worried I wouldn’t make it to the end but it was all so interesting! You guys asked good questions & the interview kept my attention until the end.
Thanks for listening Shawna!
